Paulson says market volatility not reflect strong U.S. economy
font size

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said on Friday that the U.S. economy is strong and stock market volatility does not necessarily reflect U.S. economic fundamentals.

"For at least as long as I have been looking at markets, there is volatility in markets," Paulson said in an interview with National Public Radio.

"As long as you have markets, you're going to have volatility," Paulson emphasized, adding the U.S. economy was strong due to its low unemployment and strengthening exports.

On Thursday, Paulson also made a similar speech to the Economic Club of Washington, saying that he believes the U.S. economy is " healthy" and is successfully transitioning to a moderate and sustainable rate of growth.
