The United States values its relationship with Nepal and would support a peaceful, prosperous and democratic future of the country, said a visiting U.S. official Saturday.
"Unity and inclusiveness are central for Nepal's democratic transition and future," U.S Under Secretary of State for Management Henrietta H Fore said at a press conference before wrapping up her two-day visit to Nepal.
However, she said: "Second trend that worries my government is growing unrest among various ethnic groups in Nepal."
On the incidents in southern Nepal's Terai region, she expressed hope that Nepal's leaders can find effective and transparent manner to move ahead by engaging the groups.
Stressing that the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) should act like mainstream political party by renouncing violence, extortion and intimidation, she said they do not deserve membership in a coalition government if they cannot do this.
She said the United States fully supports the statement by Nepali Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala that Maoists would not be included in the interim government unless they change their behavior.
She said the United States would not drop the Maoists from its list of terrorists until they shun violence.
Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador to Nepal James F Moriarty said the task of taking 6,000 Bhutanese refugees to the Unites States is in the process of implementation and the government of Nepal has given its consent.
Saying that the government of Bhutan should accept the refugees who desire to return homes, he said the United States has been making efforts in this regard.
