Taiwan share prices ended 0.27 percent higher on Wednesday but turnover was weaker, according to media reports reaching Hong Kong from Taipei.
The weighted index, the market's key barometer, opened higher at 7,780.3 and climbed 20.83 points, or 0.27 percent, to close at 7,757.03 after fluctuating between intra-day high of 7,784.19 and intra-day low of 7,746.35 during trading.
Market turnover weakened to 85.07 billion new Taiwan dollars (2. 57 billion U.S. dollars) from Tuesday's 103.63 billion new Taiwan dollars (3.13 billion U.S. dollars).
Six of the eight major stock categories were stronger. The textile stocks advanced the most by 1.9 percent; plastics and chemicals shares picked up 0.5 percent; construction issues inched up 0.4 percent; machinery and electronics shares moved up 0.3 percent; paper and pulp issues, banking and financial shares both added 0.1 percent.
The two other major stock categories, cement stocks and foodstuff issues, fell 0.9 percent and 0.1 percent respectively.
Losers outnumbered gainers 564 to 508, with 232 stocks remaining unchanged.
