A senior official of China's top advisory body on Thursday called on government departments and other agencies to deal promptly with proposals from the advisory body's annual meeting.

The Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) registered 4,448 proposals by members at this year's session and 169 cases had been referred to the relevant department or agency.

The Fifth Session of the Tenth National Committee of the CPPCC had received 4,797 proposals from more than 2,100 members by March 15 when it ended its annual full session, said CPPCC Vice Chairman Li Guixian.

The National Committee deals with proposals by members after the session every year and it can take months, even the whole year, for the committee to review and discuss the proposals and refer them to a specific department.

Most of the proposals are being discussed by the committee and the CPPCC rejected some unregistered proposals.

Li urged all officials, including those from government departments, legislatures and the CPPCC, to put the proposals on their agendas and handle them with greater efficiency.

The proposals included many constructive suggestions on social and economic issues, showing concern for the country and the people, Li told a CPPCC meeting.

"Handling the proposals well is not only an important job of the Communist Party and the government, but also the remarkable embodiment of negotiatory democracy that the multi-party cooperation and political consultation system carries," he said.

Li reminded officials at the meeting to review the work of dealing with proposals for all five sessions in 2007, the last session year of the Tenth National Committee of the CPPCC.

China's top advisory body ended its annual full session on March 15 after discussing state issues and a report on the work of the advisory body.

The Fifth Session of the Tenth National Committee of the CPPCC, which opened on March 3, was attended by more than 2,100 advisors from across the country.
