According to a memorandum of understanding on energy-saving products signed recently in Beijing by the China Certification Center for Energy Conservation Products and the American Environmental Protection Agency, the two organizations to cooperate to ensure that Chinese energy-saving products and American Energy Star technology will get certification in both countries. This would enable both parties to reduce costs, promote Sino-US cooperation in energy efficiency, expand the trade of energy-saving products, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
China has established a certification system for energy-saving products and a special center to do this work was created in 1998. Over 50 categories of energy-saving products have been certificated. In 2004, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Finance announced a government procurement system for such products.
The Energy Star, the mark identifying products approved by the American Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Department of Energy, has already been applied to 58 categories of energy-saving products, and the government has been recommended it stock products marked with the Energy Star.
