The European Union (EU) signed an investment pact with the Togolese government here Friday, which will bring 2 million euros to the African country.
The money is being invested to boost Togo's economic activities, Filiberto Sebregondi, EU's Ambassador to Togo, said at the signing ceremony.
Sebregondi said the long-stalled cooperation between the EU and Togo has been resumed, as Togo has done well in meeting its 22 commitments to the EU in 2004 to improve its human rights conditions and democracy.
More cooperation projects between the two sides have been put on the agenda, aimed at improving Togo's youth employment, rebuilding infrastructure, re-establishing legal mechanisms and reviving Togo's economy, Sebregondi said.
The EU shelved its development cooperation with Togo in 1993 when massive human rights violations halted attempts to bring democracy to the country. The EU only maintained support for welfare to avoid penalizing the entire population.
