Bucharest suffers fuel spill

Nearly four tonnes of fuel leaked into the sewerage network, onto roads and into green areas of a Bucharest neighbourhood on Friday.

The accident occurred early in the day, following damage to a pipeline carrying fuel oil to a thermal power plant.

While the risk of fire was lessened by the day's heavy rain, authorities took measures to avoid pollution of the Dambovita river, the most important water body in the capital city.

An investigation is underway into the cause of the leakage.
