Calmness on Saturday returned to Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and especially around the area known as "Grand Monde," former vice president Jean-Pierre Bemba's stronghold and where the national army had clashed with Bemba's sympathizers.

At the end of the clashes which took place on Thursday and Friday, the DRC's national army overran Bemba's residence in the town of Gombe and Bemba's fighters fled into the Kingabwa area of Kinshasa where they distributed arms to street boys who continued with the resistance while looting several depots situated in this area, local media reported.

At the moment, the situation around this area has been put under control. Some of Bemba's fighters had been killed during the clashes while others had fled.

Red Cross workers have been deployed in the area to give assistance to victims of the fighting.

The DRC government on Thursday issued an arrest warrant of high treason against Bemba. Until now, authorities have not officially revealed where the former vice president is being held.
