Krisztian Berki of Hungry, the 2006 European champion, out-performed Olympic champion Teng Haibin from China to lift the pommel horse title at the Cottbus gymnastics World Cup in Germany on Saturday.
Berki presented a very elegant routine including flop Russian wendeswing 360 degrees, scissors with 1/2 turn through handstand followed by Russian wendeswing 1090 degrees, which entitled him to overtake Teng Haibin, Athens Olympics gold-taker, with 16.000 points.
Teng Haibin, one of the highest favorites for the victory on the apparatus, put on a top performance of flop Russian wendeswing 270 degrees, Russian wendeswing between the pommels and a sovereign dismount with reverse Stoeckli to handstand 1/1 turn, but the very difficult routine was not enough to bring him the overall lead, only 0.075 points adrift of Berki.
Venezuela's Jose Luis Fuentes, number one in qualification, showed all kinds of world-class elements as well, but slight insecurities in some of his combinations led to a few deductions, settling with a bronze on 15.450 points.
