Earthquake hits northeastern Japan

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5 hit northeastern Japan's Iwate Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture on Saturday night, according to information released by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The center of the 10:32 p.m.quake was in northern Miyagi Prefecture and about 80 kilometers underground, the agency said.

No tsunami warning was issued for the area and no damage nor injuries have been reported so far.
