China's rise depends on more cooperation with other countries: expert

China's rise depends on more cooperation with other countries, said a Chinese expert at the China Science and Humanities Forum (CSHF) on Tuesday.

"We need cooperation," said Zheng Bijian, former vice president of the Party School of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

"China's peaceful rise implies cooperation with all sorts of countries, near or far, rich or poor, big or small," he said.

Zheng stressed that "China needs to establish open, non-exclusive interest communities with other countries."

China's dream of modernization aims at ensuring the prosperity of the nation as a whole and the well-being of all its people, according to Zheng.

China will modernize by carrying out reforms and opening up to the outside world, he said. China had learned from history the importance of peaceful development and a peaceful rise, he said, adding that China would resort neither to colonization nor to war.

"China's rise and development will not be at the expense of other powers," Zheng added.

Zheng cited Sino-U.S. relations as an example, saying China and the United States both derive benefits from their relations. China's rise does not imply the decline of the United States, he said.

"The history of the past 30 years shows that China has enjoyed rapid economic development, but so has the United States," he explained

The rise of China makes it imperative for the United States to cooperate with the world's most populous country, said former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger at the forum.
