Indonesian cental bank maintains interest rate at 9 pct

A meeting of the top officials of the Indonesian central bank of the Bank of Indonesia (BI) on Thursday decided not to change the interest rate of 9 percent, in a bid to keep the expectation of inflation around 6 percent, the governor of the bank said.

The governor of the bank Burhanuddin Abdullah also cited of a trend of increase of some prices.

"Besides, the central bank wants to see the impacts of the policies already made," he said.

The governor said that the interest rate was still be able to give rooms for banks to decrease credit interest rate to the lower level.

A deputy governor of the bank Miranda Goeltom who was quoted by the Antara News Agency said that she was optimistic the target of 6 percent in 2007 inflation could be reached.
