China's chief justice wraps up visit to India, stresses cooperation and exchange

China's chief justice Xiao Yang wrapped up his five-day visit to India on Thursday after a meeting with his Indian counterpart, chief justice K. G. Balakrishnan.

This is the first time the president of China's Supreme People's Court has visited India.

Xiao and Balakrishnan discussed the judicial systems of the two countries and possible cooperation between them.

Xiao said that China's basic principles, which are regulated by the constitution, are to govern the country according to law and establishing a socialist lawful country. As the core of China's legal system, the judicial system is the last line of defense to protect social justice and is extremely important.

As China's economy and social life improve, the judicial system and its working mechanism are improving as well, Xiao said.

China's Supreme People's Court has released two five-year reform plans that outline a comprehensive reform, he said.

Xiao said he was willing to learn from the judicial reforms from India and other countries. He proposed that members of the Chinese and Indian legal communities work to understand each other, develop friendships and initiate more cooperation and exchanges.

Balakrishnan explained the development and reform of India's judicial system. Although they work in different social systems, the Indian and Chinese legal communities face many common challenges, including how to safeguard judicial authority, how to increase judicial efficiency, and how to improve judges' capabilities. It is therefore necessary for the two legal communities to promote exchanges and cooperation, the chief justice said.
