The White House on Friday denounced Iran's "inappropriate" treatment of 15 British sailors hours after the former captives claimed they were subjected to " constant psychological pressure" during their 14 days ordeal in captivity.

The British sailors, who were freed Thursday, told a news conference in Britain that they were blindfolded, bound, kept in isolation and warned that they faced up to seven years in prison.

"It's unfortunate and extremely disappointing they were treated inappropriately in any way," National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said of the claims by the Britons.

On Iran's nuclear issues, Johndroe urged Iran to comply with UN Security Council resolutions aimed at stopping uranium enrichment. He reiterated that the United States wants to solve the problem peacefully.

"We are not seeking confrontation with the Iranians," Johndroe said.
