The Nepali Election Constituency Delimitation Commission (ECDC) is set to recommend having 241 members in the coming Constituent Assembly through elections in election constituencies, the National News Agency, RSS, reported on Monday.

According to a source of the commission, 116 seats would be allocated for southern Nepal's Terai region and 125 members would be elected from the mountainous region.

According to proposal of the commission and the Constitution, 204 members would be elected through proportionate electoral system in the constituent assembly, 241 members through election in constituencies and 17 members would be recommended by the Council of Ministers (cabinet).

As per the population census conducted in 2001, the 55 administrative districts in the country in the hilly and mountainous regions have a population of 51.57 percent and 48.43 percent respectively.

Commission spokesman Yubaraj Bhusal was quoted by the RSS as saying that the number of seats has been determined so that the electoral constituencies would be delineated on the basis of the population.

He said the commission has sought time with the prime minister for submitting its report.

He made it clear that the commission's report would be submitted either on Monday or Tuesday.

The Constituent Assembly is an elected body, like parliament, of elected people's representatives to formulate the new constitution.
