Malaysia records higher trade surplus in February

Malaysia recorded a higher trade surplus of 7.6 billion ringgit (2.17 billion U.S. dollars) in February, up 2.7 percent over the same period last year, the Department of Statistics said Monday.

Total exports and imports for this February were valued at 41.1 billion ringgit (11.74 billion U.S. dollars) and 33.5 billion ringgit (9.57 billion U.S. dollars) respectively, the department said in its latest release of Malaysian external trade statistics.

"The largest export revenue earner was electrical and electronic products, valued at 18.7 billion ringgit (5.34 billion U.S. dollars) and accounted for 45.4 percent of total exports," said the department.

Imports of intermediate and capital goods constituted 83.4 percent of total imports.

For the first two months of the year 2007, Malaysia recorded a lower trade surplus of 15.2 billion ringgit (4.34 billion U.S. dollars) as against 16.2 billion ringgit (4.63 billion U.S. dollars) in the same period last year.

Exports expanded by 4.3 percent to 89.1 billion ringgit (25.46 billion U.S. dollars) while imports expanded by 6.8 percent to 73. 9 billion ringgit (21.11 billion U.S. dollars), it added.
