"We are treating Sejm Speaker Marek Jurek's decision to resign the Law and Justice (PiS) membership as a 'serious' one but decisions can be changed," Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski told reporters on Saturday.

The prime minister declared that the PiS would continue to investigate possibilities to change the constitution as far as the protection of life is concerned.

"If Sejm Speaker Marek Jurek feels offended, I apologize," Polish PAP news agency quoted the him as saying.

Earlier Jurek told reporters he was offended at a meeting of the ruling PiS party's Political Council.

However, Kaczynski refused to brief the reporters on the course of the meeting.

Jurek left the Saturday meeting of the PiS Political Council shortly after its opening. A few other PiS members, including Artur Zawisza, Dariusz Kleczek and Malgorzata Bartyzel left the meeting with Jurek. Kaczynski said that Jurek resigned his PiS membership.

At a press conference held later on Saturday, Jurek said the decision to resign the membership of the PiS, a party he worked for for many years, was a difficult decision for him.

On Friday, The Sejm rejected all four proposed amendments to the constitution regarding life protection. And then Jurek said that he filed his resignation from the post of Sejm Speaker and added that his motion for resignation will be subject to vote at the coming Sejm meeting.

Jurek stressed that his resignation was a "sign of personal responsibility" for he was a staunch supporter of amending the constitution.
