6 Taliban militants killed in Southern Afghanistan
font size

The U.S.-led coalition and Afghan troops killed six Taliban insurgents in Helmand province of southern Afghanistan, a coalition statement said Sunday.

The combined troops received rocket propelled grenade and small arms fire attack in Sangin district from Taliban rebels on Saturday morning, the statement said.

The troops returned small arms and mortar fire, and maneuvered near the enemy site, it said.

After pinning down the Taliban fighters, the troops called in coalition close air support, which destroyed the enemy site, it added.

"Six Taliban fighters were killed, and there were no Afghan civilian injuries reported," according to the statement.

As the weather gets warmer, Afghanistan has witnessed much more Taliban-linked violence.

Due to rising Taliban-linked insurgency, over 800 persons have been killed in Afghanistan this year.
