Japanese carmaker Suzuki booked a 37.3 percent surge in first quarter sales in Indonesia and ran through the ranks to second behind traditional leader Toyota, whose sales slipped 11.6 percent.

Suzuki sales rose to 11,041 units in the first quarter of the year from 8,500 in the corresponding period last year, surpassing fellow Japanese manufacturers Honda and Mitsubishi in the Indonesian growing market.

Toyota remains a dominant leader with 30,477 units, but suffered a significant decline from 34,476 units in the first quarter of last year, according to the data from the Indonesian automotive industries association Gaikindo reaching here Monday.

Daihatsu, now in collaboration with Toyota, and Indonesia's biggest truck seller Mitsubishi trailed behind Suzuki with 11,364 units and 11,041 respectively.

Honda was at distant fifth 8,746 units, followed by Isuzu (4, 078 units), Hino (1,458), Nissan (1,402), Detroit-based Ford (982) and South Korea's KIA (709).

First quarter total sales rose 6.4 percent to 84,519 units from last year's 79,411 units.
