Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan met on Thursday with Chancellor of University of California, Berkeley of United States Robert Birgeneau.

Zeng said that sustainable development is an issue of world attention and the Chinese government recently advocated a concept of scientific development featured by a resource efficient and environment-friendly society.

He hoped both Chinese and the U.S. institutions and universities can step up academic exchanges and cooperation in the fields of energy conservation, environmental protection, renewable and clean energy so as to jointly contribute to the world sustainable development.

During his visit in Beijing, Birgeneau was conferred the title of "honorary doctor" by China's prestigious Tsinghua University.
