Bangladesh okays direct road link with MyanmarBangladesh's caretaker government has approved a proposal for signing an agreement on Bangladesh- Myanmar direct road link to promote trade and commerce between the two countries, The Daily Star reported Sunday. After discussing the report of the technical taskforce at a meeting, the advisors of the caretaker government on Saturday approved the proposal for signing the cross-border road agreement. The foreign advisor of Bangladesh's caretaker government is likely to sign the road-link deal during his visit to Myanmar next month, the daily said. An initiative was taken in 2003 for building the road and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed to this effect during the visit of Myanmar prime minister to Dhaka in 2004. Later, a technical and finance taskforce was formed to expedite the process. Construction of a 23-km road from Gundhum in Cox's Bazaar ( Bangladesh) to Bolibazar in Myanmar will boost trade and commerce between the two neighboring countries, the meeting was apprised.
