Polish President Lech Kaczynski and visiting British Prime Minister Tony Blair discussed in Warsaw Friday the future shape of the EU Constitution and U.S. anti- missile shield.
The two politicians told reporters after their meeting that they have convergent views as to the future shape of the EU Constitution.
They stressed that Europe should be strong and effective and remain the union of independent states.
Blair, who paid a few-hour visit to Poland Friday, stressed that Poland is not only a strong EU member state but also a loyal and strong ally in NATO, standing arm in arm with British soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Polish PAP news agency reported. Kaczynski stressed that Poland wants EU to be strong, but as a union of independent states and not an above-national structure.
Kaczynski and Blair also agreed that U.S. plans to base elements of missile defense system in Poland have a defensive nature and are not aimed against anybody, including Russia.
On Friday Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow will have to ensure its safety in case the U.S. places the missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic.
According to Kaczynski, Putin is aware that the U.S. plans are not aimed against Russia.
"We are witnessing nervous reactions on the part of our Eastern neighbor. It is obvious that the 'anti-missile shield' has a defensive nature and as a defensive weapon is not aimed against anybody," PAP quoted Kaczynski as claiming.
