The Chinese People's Armed Police (PAP) has adopted a new type of vehicle license plate that cannot be faked in an effort to get false PAP vehicles off the road, according to its Transportation and Fuel Department.
For years, canny civilians put false PAP plates on their vehicles to avoid paying highway tolls and get through official inspections at checkpoints. Fake military cars or trucks carrying illegal goods had become all too common on Chinese roads.
Last year, the PAP launched a campaign which netted thousands of illegal vehicles throughout the country.
The new license plates use special reflector materials and radio frequency chips.
Management of the new PAP license plates will be hooked into the network of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). This will make it possible to inspect military vehicles online.
The PLA adopted new license plates two years ago. Few people now dare to drive cars with false military plates, because the new rule obliges anyone driving a military car to have their military ID with them.
