Six mass organizations in Macao hold protest march on May day
font size

A protest march was launched by six mass organizations on Tuesday, with thousands of local residents joining it, demanding the "reduction of labor import" and the "guarantee of livelihood."

Some protesters clashed with the police, but no casualties were reported.

According to the Macao police, some demonstrators ignored the police regulations on the march routes and tried on several occasion to break through police lines. As a result, a number of police were injured slightly during the clash.

Police said that during the chaos some people tumbled and that they fired shots into the air to prevent a stampede. A few protesters suspected of attacking police were detained.

By 20:00 local time (1200 GMT), all protesters dispersed.

Police said the number of people detained will be made public later.
