UNICEF annual meeting held in HK

Over 120 representatives from around the world gathered here Sunday to hold the 52nd annual meeting of the National Committees for UNICEF, discussing issues of improving the well-being of children in developing countries.

It is the first time that such an annual meeting is held in Hong Kong. The UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman, the Head of United Nations Children's Fund, senior officials from UNICEF New York and Geneva Headquarters as well as the Chairmen and Executive Directors of the 37 National Committees and representatives from the UNICEF field offices attended the meeting.

At a welcome cocktail reception on Sunday, UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassadors Leon Lai and Lang Lang, as well as ambassador of Hong Kong Committee Miriam Yeung were invited to share their experiences of visiting developing countries with UNICEF.

Lang Lang, who is considered to be one of the most exciting pianists of the time and also the youngest UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador of the world, and 10-year-old Hong Kong pianist, Aristo Sham, performed during the cocktail reception to welcome the overseas participants to Hong Kong.
