Blair congratulates Sarkozy for winning French presidencyBritish Prime Minister Tony Blair telephoned Nicolas Sarkozy on Sunday to congratulate him on his victory in the French presidential elections. The conversation, though very short, was very friendly and warm, and in which Sarkozy thanked Blair for his congratulations, Blair's office said in London. David Cameron, the leader of Britain's main opposition Conservative Party, also extended his congratulations to Sarkozy and wished him "every success." "Now France has voted for change. I wish Nicolas Sarkozy every success as he takes up his responsibilities as president," he said. Sarkozy, of the right-wing Union for a Popular Movement, won the French presidential run-off on Sunday, scoring an easy victory over Segolene Royal of the left-wing Socialist Party. Sarkozy won over 53 percent of the vote against some 47 percent for Royal, who saw her chances of becoming France's first woman president dashed. Source: Xinhua |
