UN calls for demobilization of child soldiers in Nepal
font size

The United Nation's Security Council Saturday called on the Nepali government and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) to immediately discharge all child soldiers from military service.

Addressing the government and the CPN-M, the council's working group on children and armed conflict called for the immediate liberation of child soldiers without waiting for further stages in that process.

"In regard to Nepal, we hope that the children who remain in the ranks of the CPN-M will be demobilized and reintegrated in their communities without delay," Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy said.

Previously, the New York-based Human Rights Watch had also urged the government and the CPN-M to release all child soldiers in the Maoist camps across the nation through a letter to the CPN- M.
