Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa on Friday said that the country's National Congress should ratify an international treaty that "regulates human activities at sea."
In a statement to Mauricio Larrea, president of the legislature's International Affairs and National Defense Commission, Correa made a "patriotic" appeal for the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
In the statement, Correa recalled all the efforts made by Ecuador to achieve the ratification of the agreement, reached in December 1982 and currently passed by 153 countries.
"This international treaty regulates human activities at sea, including the exploitation of natural resources, as well as all scientific research that benefits humanity," Correa said.
In the statement, Correa noted the convention's importance to Ecuador.
