UK's online spending marks record growth

The online spending in UK marked a record growth in April, with a 55 percent rise year-on-year and a 100 billion pounds (about 197 billion U.S. dollars) total spending in 12 years, according to latest figures released on Friday.

Britons spent 3.46 billion pounds online last month, the largest recorded since December 2003, according to the Interactive Media in Retail Group.

Britain's online spending is monitored by the IMRG -- the industry body set up in 1990 to represent e-retailers.

Spending on travel which is still the largest category of consumer spending on-line, accounted about 7 billion pounds last year, followed by electrical goods at 5 billion pounds, according to the group.

The spread of high-speed broadband was believed to be the major power behind the rapid online spending growth.
