The Chinese government handed over to Sudan Wednesday a new batch of humanitarian assistance materials for the displaced people in the western Sudanese region of Darfur.

The hand-over documents were signed by Sudanese Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Kosti Manibi and Chinese Ambassador to Sudan Zhang Dong, with the presence of visiting Special Representative of the Chinese Government for Darfur Liu Guijin.

This is the second of the four batches of humanitarian assistance materials which the Chinese government had promised to offer for the Darfurian people since 2005, Liu said at the signing ceremony.

The Chinese special representative said that his current visit to Sudan was the first one since he was appointed to the present post, which was aimed at "getting acquainted with the Sudanese officials and listening to view points regarding the Darfur problem".

Liu said that he was "deeply impressed" by his trip in the Darfur region on Tuesday, during which he visited the cities of Fashir and Nyala as well as three camps for displaced people.

"Due to efforts of the Sudanese government, with the help of the international community, the situation in Darfur is basically stable despite of some problems," the Chinese envoy added.

For his part, Sudan's Manibi described the hand-over ceremony as "an important event which will promote the Sudanese-Chinese relations".

China is playing an expanding role of helping push forward the peace process in Darfur, praised the Sudanese minister, adding that we appreciate the Chinese government for its support for Sudan's development and infrastructures in general and for the humanitarian purposes in particular.

Liu and his delegation arrived in Sudan on Saturday on a five- day visit.
