In order to track changing glacier conditions in the country, with the backdrop of global warming in the past two to three decades, "China's glacier and glacier changes investigation" project started in Beijing on May 22nd. It is reported that this is the second glacier investigation.
According to Liu Shiyin, the project leader, the earliest work in cataloging glaciers in China began in 1978. The work reported the state of glaciers from the 1960s to the early 1980s. A great change has taken place in western glaciers over the past two to three decades. Although scientists recently carried out some research in changing glacier conditions, they are still unable to fully assess the overall changes in western glaciers because of the limited monitoring of glaciers. They have not even made a quantitative assessment of western areas, especially the impact of glacier drought on water resources in the arid northwest regions.
