Czech President Vaclav Klaus said Saturday that the future of Kosovo is the "biggest problem" in the region, according to reports from the Czech city of Brno.

Klaus made the remarks at an annual regional summit in Brno, at which presidents from 15 European nations discussed issues ranging from the future status of Kosovo and the enlargement of the European Union (EU).

"It appears that the biggest problem of the region is the problem of Kosovo," Klaus told the summit attended by the leaders from central, southern and eastern Europe.

He added that his country favors the further enlargement of the EU, especially for western Balkan nations.

The UN security council is seeking solutions to the future of Kosovo, which has been under UN administration since 1999.

Western nations back the Serbian province's independence, but Serbia refuses to give up its sovereignty over Kosovo, which is 90 percent ethnic Albanian.
