The life was paralyzed in the Nepali capital of Kathmandu Valley Sunday due to a general strike led by the Nepal Educational Republican Forum (NERF), affiliated to the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M).
The life in Kathmandu came to a standstill as the protesting teachers supported by the students organizations obstructed vehicular movement and shops were shut down in major thoroughfares of the city.
NERF President Guna Raj Lohani said Saturday the general strike was to protest the "tyrannical oppression" of peaceful agitation.
On Friday, dozens of teachers joining sit-in program in front of the Education Ministry at Kesharmahal in Kathmandu were injured when police intervened.
The protesting teachers demanded free treatment to the injured in the incident and sought apology from Education Minister Pradip Nepal.
In the past 10 days, the teachers' strike has affected 7.8 million students of over 35,000 schools in Nepal.
CPN-M students' wing, All Nepal National Independent Students Union (ANNISU-Revolutionary) actively participated in the teachers ' strike across the nation and Sunday's general strike in Kathmandu Valley.
The protesting students claimed that they had supported the teachers' strike because a large number of bystanders including some of the students were injured when the police indiscriminately used batons tear gas in front of the ministry.
