Thirty civil society organizations to participate in AU summit

Thirty civil society organizations in Africa are to participate in the next African Union (AU) summit scheduled for June in Accra, Ghana, a statement released on Saturday in Lagos said.

The statement by the Executive Director of Media Foundation for West Africa Kwame Karikari said the organizations would next month engage in activities on peace, human rights and development in preparation for the summit.

The organizations were concerned about conflicts, poverty, disease, maternal mortality, insecurity and human rights abuses in some African countries, the statement said.

Non-governmental organizations, including the Network of African Freedom of Expression Organizations and the Center for Research, Education and Development of Rights in Africa, both based in Ghana, initiated the participation of the 30 organizations in the summit, the statement added.
