Iran-EU talks on Tehran's nuclear program postponed
font size

The next round of talks between Iran 's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani and European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana over Iran's nuclear issues has been postponed, the official IRNA news agency reported on Sunday.

"Talks between Iran's secretary of Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and Solana has been delayed upon an agreement between the two sides," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini told his weekly press conference.

"The rescheduled date and venue of Solana-Larijani talks will be announced later after consultations between the two sides," he added.

IRNA news agency quoted Larijani as saying earlier this month that his upcoming talks with Solana would take place in a European country on May 31.

In late April, Larijani and Solana held two rounds of talks in the Turkish capital of Ankara over Iran's uranium enrichment program.

After their meetings, the two negotiators told reporters that they had made progress in their talks.

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted on March 24 a new resolution with tougher sanctions to pressure Iran to suspend uranium enrichment activities.

Iran has refused to heed the Security Council's demand, insisting that its nuclear programs are for peaceful purposes only.

However, the United States and some other Western countries have been accusing Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of its civilian nuclear programs.
