Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan on Monday called on science workers to learn from the late Chinese nuclear physicist Wang Ganchang and endeavor to make innovations to develop the country's nuclear industry.

Zeng made the remarks at a symposium in remembrance of the eminent scientist Wang Ganchang (1907-1998) who participated in designing and making China's first atomic bomb, hydrogen bomb and satellite in the 1960s and early 70s.

Zeng praised Wang for having made great achievements in nuclear field and also made outstanding contributions to China's nuclear industry.

Zeng urged science workers to carry forward Wang's pioneering spirit and improve China's nuclear technology in areas of nuclear power, nuclear fuel and manufacturing of major nuclear equipment.

He also called on science workers to make innovations in nuclear industry so as to develop and build large, advanced nuclear stations with intellectual property rights solely owned by China at an early date.

Wang was born in Changshu, east China's Jiangsu Province. He graduated from Department of Physics of Qinghua University in 1929, received Ph.D. from Berlin University, Germany in 1934 and returned to China in 1934.

In his over 60 years of academic career, Wang trained three generations of scientists, including Nobel Prize winner Li Zhengdao.
