Police seize 892 illegal guns in two months

China's police authorities have confiscated 892 guns and more than 50,000 rounds of ammunition over the past two months in a campaign to crack down on illegal firearms and explosives.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Public Security said on Friday the police had also seized 32,228 detonators, 30,610 kilograms of explosives and 9,489 kilograms of toxic chemicals.

"A total of 728 cases involving illegal possession of explosives and guns have been dealt with since April, involving 1,335 suspects," the spokesman said.

The ministry launched a six-month nationwide campaign in April, targeting the illegal production, distribution, trade and possession of firearms and explosives.

The ministry has said it would offer rewards of up to 10,000 yuan (1,282 U.S. dollars) to those offering information about illegal activities.

China's police have confiscated 12,350 tons of explosives and 502,000 guns in the past five years, which they say has led to a drop in the number of explosive and gun violence cases.
