Visiting United States Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, Barry Lowenkron on Saturday urged Nepali ruling eight parties to pass the bills related to the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections immediately and to improve the law and order situation in the country.
The US diplomat lauded the eight-party decision to hold the CA elections in November but urged the parties to make necessary arrangements for free and impartial polls soon.
Addressing a press meeting at the American center in the capital prior to his departure, Lowekron expressed concern that the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) were not abiding by the commitments they made while signing the peace agreement.
Stating that his government believed that polls and guns cannot go together in a democratic process, Lowekron said there can be no role of fear, violence and intimidation in a democratic process, " the use of violence as a political tool will be unacceptable," he added.
Lowenkron, who arrived here for a four-day visit on Wednesday, is returning home Saturday.
Earlier, he had met Nepali Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, Speaker Subash Nembang, Foreign Minister Sahana Pradhan and Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokhrel.
