Zhang Gaoli was elected secretary of the Tianjin Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Saturday.

Zhang, born in November 1946, was elected to the post at the first plenary session of the 9th CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee held in the northern Tianjin Municipality.

Zhang is a native of Jinjiang, southeast China's Fujian Province, and he joined the CPC in 1973.

He is now a member of the 16th CPC Central Committee and has served as secretary of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee since March this year.
