No major progress achieved in India-US nuclear talks
font size

The three-day negotiation between India and the United States over the civil nuclear cooperation deal ended Saturday without any major progress, though Indian Foreign Secretary Shankar Menon expressed satisfaction with the talks, the local newspaper the Hindu reported Sunday.

Senior Indian officials close to the talks told the daily that the talks were concluded with a "stalemate" late Friday evening on several issues, including the right to reprocess spent fuel.

New Delhi insisted that the right to reprocess spent fuel must be written into the text of the agreement. The U.S. Under Secretary for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns said that he would consult and get back on the issue.

There are major differences between India and the U.S. on civil nuclear issues, and intensive negotiations would be required between the two countries.
