Thai Democrats urge gov't to lift political bans

The Democrat Party of Thailand Sunday called on the government and Council for National Security (CNS) to lift the two bans on political party activities within two weeks.

Democrat deputy leader Alongkorn Pollabutr was quoted by local radio FM 100 as saying that the bans should be annulled or amended so that political parties could resume their activities.

He said the lifting of the ban would be a good signal that Thailand was returning to full democracy, and thus creating good image in the eyes of the international communities.

The two bans, Announcement 15 and 27, were imposed by temporary authority the Council for Democratic Reform which was set up after the September 19 coup. The bans prevent parties from holding any political activities, including the preparations for the election.
