Malaysia's Industrial Production Index (IPI) for April this year increased marginally by 0.4 percent to 130.8 compared with the same month of last year.

The growth was attributed to the 4.0-percent rise in the electricity index and the 0.1-percent increase in the manufacturing index.

The increase in the manufacturing sector was driven by the higher indices registered by the refined petroleum products and basic chemical products.

However, the mining index fell slightly by 0.4 percent, a decline for three consecutive months.

Compared with the previous month, the IPI fell 3.4 percent, due to a contraction recorded in all the sectors. The mining index, the manufacturing index and the electricity index went down 4.9 percent, 3.1 percent and 2.8 percent respectively.

The IPI is a measurement of the rate of change in the production of industrial commodities, obtained from the manufacturing, mining and electricity sectors.
