The number of mobile phone users in Indonesia would reach 122.1 million, up from 66.5 million in 2006 and 46 million in 2005, an executive has said.
Hasnul Suhaimi, president director of cellular operator Excelcomindo Pratama, was quoted Friday by English daily The Jakarta Post as saying that the mobile telecommunications penetration rate would reach its peak at around 50 percent within the next two or three years as the market was already beginning to consolidate.
The current penetration rate stands at between 32 percent and 35 percent, with a total of 75 million subscribers.
"Thus, the industry will continue to be attractive for the next two or three years," Hasnul said.
Excelcomindo is currently the No. 3 player in the local mobile phone industry, with a total of 10.1 million subscribers at the end of March.
Telkomsel was the market leader in the industry, with about 38 million subscribers.
