Hungary discovers Botticelli fresco
font size

A full-figure fresco by an Italian Renaissance painter, possibly Botticelli, has been discovered in the castle of Esztergom in northern Hungary, Director of the Esztergom Castle Museum Bela Horvath told reporters on Friday.

The picture depicts one of the four virtues - temperance - and it was found decorating the wall of the one-time study of Archbishop of Esztergom, John Vitez.

Restorers over the past seven years have been working to recover some paintings which are attributed to the second half of the 15th century, and it is now most certain that one of the four murals is Botticelli's, Horvath said.

Zsuzsa Wild, head of the restoring group and another restorer from the group made the discovery using scientific methods. Wild said they had examined the feature characteristics of the woman figure on the painting and art historians found close resemblance to the works of the Renaissance master.
