China lodges representations to U.S. on monument to "victims of communist regimes"

China has lodged stern representations with the United States after the inauguration of a bronze memorial to "victims of communist regimes" in Washington D.C., a Foreign Ministry spokesman said in Beijing on Wednesday.

"We resent and oppose the U.S. acts and comments and have lodged stern representations with the U.S. side," said Qin when responding to a journalist's question.

Qin was asked to comment on the inauguration ceremony Tuesday of a "monument to victims of communist regimes" launched by a U.S. foundation and attended by U.S. President George W. Bush.

Qin said the world trend is in favor of peace, cooperation and development. Different social systems should not reject each other but seek to learn from each other.

"There are political forces in the United States that still think in 'cold war' terms and seek to provoke conflicts between different ideologies and social systems. But this runs counter to the trend of the times and is unpopular," Qin said.

"We ask the U.S. side to give up 'cold war' thinking and the practice of making ideological judgments about other countries. The U.S. should stop interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, do more to promote dialogue and cooperation, and take concrete steps to safeguard the constructive and cooperative ties that exist between China and the United States," said Qin.
