Indonesia said Thursday the Defense Cooperation Agreement signed with Singapore in February still face some hurdles that require the two countries to have further talks to overcome them.
Speaking to reporters at the presidential palace Thursday, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said that Indonesia believes the agreement requires the signing of the implementation agreement (IA) before taking effect, but Singapore considers it unnecessary. "Indonesia and Singapore need to sit together and talk," he said.
Under the agreement, Indonesia allows Singapore to hold military exercises in its territories, in exchange for Singapore's willingness to sign the long-awaited extradition treaty.
But the Indonesian parliament reportedly opposes the military deal, with several factions in the House of Representatives threatening not to ratify the agreement.
