font size

An explosion killed at least 30 police officers in the center of Kabul, the Afghan capital, on Sunday morning, Kabul deputy police chief Alishah Paktiawal said.

Between 30 and 35 police officers were killed in the explosion, Paktiawal said, adding most of the casualties were teachers and staff from a police academy.

The attack was targeting a police bus at a bus station both for civilians and the police, Interior Ministry spokesman Zamarai Bashari told Xinhua.

The explosion also caused some civilian casualties, but there was no immediate information about it, the police said.

A witness, Abdul, said the explosion damaged some civilian buses, and many people were escaping from the site.

A policeman at the site said someone put explosives into the bus and blew it up, adding the bus may take scores of persons.
