Zambia said that the London Court ruling against former President Frederick Chiluba and his cohorts would be enforced if no one opposes its registration by the end of the week, Daily Mail reported on Sunday.
Mike Mulongoti, chief spokesman for the Zambian government, was quoted as saying that the penalty meted by Judge Peter Smith would be applied to those who were found liable by the London High Court, if none of them challenge the registration of the judgment.
"They were given seven days, if there is no opposition, the consequences can then be enforced," said Mulongoti, who is also Information Minister.
Chiluba's spokesperson Emmunuel Mwamba declined to reveal whether or not the former ruler of Zambia would appeal against the registration.
London High Court Judge Peter Smith made his original ruling against Chiluba on May 4, asking the ailing politician and his co- defendants to pay back 85 per cent of the money within 14 days from the service of the judgment, but soon increased Chiluba's indebtedness to the Zambian government to more than 58 million U.S. dollars after adding interest and costs.
