Nicaraguan prosecutors on Tuesday filed charges against former President Enrique Bolanos for allegedly covering up an illegal immigration case during his term.
The former president was charged for not taking action against former Immigration Director Fausto Carcabelos despite accusations that he allowed 159 illegal immigrants into Nicaragua, Attorney General Javier Morazan said.
Morazan said Bolanos ignored warnings from his interior minister about Carcabelos' violations and rehired him after he was suspended.
The prosecutor general also urged that Balanos' immunity be removed so that he could face trial.
Balanos, in office from 2002 to January 2007, can only be tried if 60 percent of the country's legislators vote to strip him of his immunity he has as a member of the National Assembly.
