Nigerian labor unions have called off a four-day strike in protest of a government fuel-price hike that massively crippled public services after the government agreed to freeze the price at 70 naira (55 U.S. cents) for one year.

"The general strike is suspended with effect from midnight," the unions and government jointly announced late Saturday in a statement.

The unions had previously demanded a total withdrawal of a 10- naira price hike introduced in the last days of the last government, which stepped down on May 29, but at last accepted the government's offer which halved the hike. The price used to be 65 naira (51 cents).
